What is Environment Day


World Environment Day (WED) is international event celebrated world wide every year on 5th June to increase globe awareness. The main aim of this event is to spread global awareness to protect our nature.

World Environment Day History


World Environment Day (also referred to as WED) has been began celebrating as an annual occasion on each 5th of June since 1973 as a way to elevate the worldwide awareness in regards to the significance of the healthy and green environment within the human lives, to resolve the environmental issues by implementing some optimistic environmental actions in addition to to make aware common public worldwide that everybody is liable for saving his atmosphere and not only someone, authorities or organizations working for it.

World environment day was first established to be celebrated yearly by operating some efficient campaigns by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) within the conference on Human Environment started from 5th to 16th of June at United Nations in 1972. It was first time celebrated in 1973 with the actual theme “Only one Earth”. Since 1974, the celebration marketing campaign of the world environment day is hosted in numerous cities of the world.

It's a large annual celebration began by the United Nations General Assembly to engage hundreds of thousands of individuals from completely different international locations throughout the globe in addition to draw attention of political and health organizations to implement some efficient actions.

Chemical scientific research performed a lot in the previous centuries to favor people - from developing new drugs, producing exciting modern materials and discovering the fundamental of life.However as Spiderman speaks,
with great power comes great responsibility.

And the greatest responsibility is to always protect the environment.

In 1962, the author Rachel Carson published a famous book called Silent Spring. It showed how inorganic pesticides were harming birds. It was the very first detailed book on how human being behavior were injuring the environment. As time passes, a lot of books as well as newspapers reports made the issues of saving our planet well-known to everyone.

The Stockholm Meeting

On 5th June 1972, globe leaders got connected to think seriously on our planet's future the first time. Leaders of 113 countries met in the Stockholm Conference, and also agreed on a strategy to reverse a few of the damages. It had been the first time that issues similar to CFCs and global warming were analyzed.

After the Conference, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was set up. It coordinates actions of all UN member states on problems. One of it is great achievements was the Montreal Agreement (watch out for an article on this), which banned CFCs and help prevent ozone depletion. The UNEP today funds environmental security activities across the world, and is supporting countries draw up a treaty to end global warming.

World Environment Day 2016


The anniversary of the Stockholm Conference is recognized as World Environment Day each year. Every year, there is a unique theme. The first ever theme was 'Only One Planet'. This year's theme(2016) is Most Species.

After 1987, there was a few city in which the main event is kept. This season the host city is Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. In Rwanda, it coincides with the annual Kwita Izina Ceremony - when baby gorillas are given their names!
